Carcant is a traditionally run farm,
carrying mainly hill Cheviots with some Scottish Blackface sheep. Most of the work is still done the age-old way with "dog and stick".
The 239 Hectare (~600acre) Carcant Estate is situated in the beautifully scenic Scottish Moorfoot Hills approximately 25 miles south of Edinburgh. The Estate is owned by the Sommerville family. In 2009, three wind turbines were erected and part of the wind farm scheme includes a habitat enhancement plan.
Julie has been the tenant farmer here since November 2005. She manages the farm using traditional shepherding skills to maximise the health & welfare of the sheep and so produce quality lamb. In addition, Julie has initiated a grazing management plan that encourages grassland and flora diversity . She is also also putting measures in place that will improve the water margins. Combined, these environmental enrichments will enhance the habitat for a wide variety of wildlife including brown hare, black grouse and farmland waders.
This work is being done with support of the Carcant Estate Trustees and with funding from both the Scotland Rural Development Programme and the recently erected Wind Farm.
The Perfect Birthday or Christmas Present. Julie sells gift vouchers for both tuition and demonstrations.
There is some holiday accommodation on the estate for people training their sheepdogs with Julie, but space is limited and needs early booking. PLEASE NOTE: NO DOGS ARE ALLOWED IN THE HOLIDAY HOMES
